The FDNY honored five fallen firefighters in Manhattan Wednesday, all who died this year, including their most recent loss of Deputy Fire Chief Michael Fahy.
The annual memorial service was held at the Fireman's Memorial on Riverside Drive. Mayor Bill de Blasio, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro and other city leaders attended the event to pay their respect.
"The families of these five families epitomize strength and they are an inspiration to all of us," Nigro said. "We will always remember your loved ones in our hearts and here and every year at our memorial."
In September, Fahy was killed in a home explosion while responding to a gas leak in the Bronx. It was later determined the home was being used as a marijuana grow operation. Several arrests have been made in the case. Fahy was a 17-year veteran of the FDNY and left behind three children and a wife. His wife received the Medal of Valor and the Medal of Supreme Sacrifice for his service.
Following the service, FDNY members held a parade in front of the honored families and elected officials as a sign of respect for those who have died in service.
