A plaque ceremony was held in Morris Park Saturday for an EMT worker a year after he died while on duty.

The event at the emergency medical dispatch honored the memory of Frederick Whiteside, who died of a cardiac arrest.

“He had grace, style and a beautiful smile. He was loving and strong," said his mother, Audrey Felton.

Whiteside is survived by his mother and daughter.

Felton talked about his heartwarming characteristics that were echoed by his collegues.

“He may not have said much about how hard it all was but he showed it in the way he cared for those around him. His actions spoke louder than any words ever could," said Kydeshia Langdon, an EMT.

Whiteside was a 22 year veteran of the department and spent his career working in the Bronx and Brooklyn. He started as a call taker and worked his way to an EMT.

“A Black man growing up in Brooklyn, Frederickchose a path that made him not only a leader but a vital force in our community," Langdon said.

Whiteside's colleagues say even after a year of him being gone, his memory will stay with them forever.
