The FDNY fought a four-alarm fire in Williamsbridge on Thursday evening.
Fire officials say that the fire broke out just after 5 p.m. on Thursday at 4055 Carpenter Avenue.
FDNY officials say the fire quickly spread in the area between the ceiling and the roof, and say that the flames traveled over to neighboring buildings.
Red Cross and representatives from the New York City Office of Emergency Management are on the scene helping residents from the building and aiding in the search for temporary housing for these displaced residents.
The Department of Buildings says that inspectors on scene found that the building sustained extensive structural damage due to the fire, including a partially collapsed roof and unstable interior walls. They ordered a vacate order that included 53 apartment units.
Multiple residents spoke with News 12, saying that they did not hear fire alarms within the building.
One civilian with non-minor injuries has been transported to a nearby hospital. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and there are no other injuries at this time.
The fire is now under control.
