Officials are trying to find better ways for firefighters to fight blazes in high-rise buildings. In particular, the FDNY is targeting the ?blowtorch effect? -- when a sudden blast of wind from broken windows or an open door sends fire shooting into hallways. The event is responsible for killing many firefighters, including John Martinsonon of Crown Heights. As part of the tests, a series of fires will be set in a building on Governors Island. The fires, air movement and the impact wind has on the blaze will be taped and analyzed. Firefighters will use simple tools like portable fans and fireproof blankets to lessen the impact of the wind.
