Officials from FEMA and the state Emergency Management Office are touring tornado-ravaged Bay Ridge and Sunset Park Monday to determine aid assistance.

Congressman Vito Fossella, who spoke to Gov. Eliot Spitzer last week about the damage, will join officials during the tour.

Inspectors will conduct a preliminary damage assessment, which will be used to decide whether the state can handle the cleanup. The state will turn to FEMA for federal money for any damage beyond what it can cover.

Officials stress the on-site inspections are not a guarantee of federal relief. The assessment will go to Spitzer first, then President Bush.

Homeowners are urged to keep in contact with their insurance carriers.

Some officials have said the damage could be in the tens of millions of dollars.
