A fire at a Kensington house killed three people Monday, including a 12-year-old boy.
Officials say the blaze started after midnight in the attic of a home on E. 19th Street. According to police, 76-year-old Mari Vilixama and her 50-year-old daughter Doananouse Dodard were pronounced dead at the scene. Vilixama's 12-year-old grandson, called Benji, was rushed to New York Community Hospital of Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say a 16-year-old boy was taken to Kings County Hospital. He is in serious but stable condition. Three firefighters were also treated for injuries suffered from battling the blaze.
Councilman Mathieu Eugene surveyed the damage at the home where the Haitian-American family perished. He said the fatal fire is tragic for everyone, not just his community.
According to investigators, a problem with electrical wiring caused the fire. Neighbors say the family had lived there for at least 10 years after Vilixama relocated her family from Haiti.
