A fire tore through a popular Coney Island pizzeria Saturday, destroying the building and devastating the owners.
Fire officials say the blaze may have started in the old-fashioned coal oven inside Totonno's Pizzeria on Neptune Avenue. Though many of the irreplaceable pictures and plaques hung on the walls were spared by the flames, firefighters say the building has sustained damage.
Many people gathered outside Totonno's Saturday to share their stories of the neighborhood landmark. Councilman Domenic Recchia, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) says Totonno's served pizza to Frank Sinatra and President Kennedy.
The owners of Totonno's were devastated by the fire, but say they hope to reopen.
