Fire Island homeowners were hit hard Monday by a storm that brought rain and powerful winds.
Waves came up and crashed all the way onto the dunes.
Residents of the island have been pleading with the Army Corps of Engineers to bulk up the barrier beach for months. They say Monday’s storm is proving their point.
“We’re asking Steve Bellone, the county executive – our governor, Gov. Hochul, to declare a state of emergency for Fire Island so we can get emergency repairs done now before people start losing their houses, we start losing our water companies, our utilities on the island because there’s nothing really protecting us from the Atlantic Ocean,” says Seaview Association President Thomas Ruskin.
The Army Corps shot down calls in October to repair shoreline damage on the east end of Fire Island any sooner than 2025. They agreed to reconsider last week.
