Saturday marked the 36th anniversary of a massive fire at a Sheepshead Bay Waldbaums that killed six firefighters.
The families of the fallen firefighters and FDNY members came out to Saint Brendan's Church in Midwood for an annual memorial Mass. The men were killed when the grocery store's roof collapsed while they were working to put out the flames.
Since that tragedy in 1978, the city's new Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro says FDNY members have had intensive training on how to deal with those types of situations.
Nigro says the FDNY will always come together on Aug. 2 of each year to remember the victims and support their families.
