There are some things you should know to stay safe if you plan on setting off backyard fireworks in New Jersey for the Fourth of July holiday.

A new report from Consumer Product Safety Commission shows more than 10,000 people were treated in emergency rooms due to fireworks last year. There were also 11 deaths due to fireworks last year, according to the report.

Safety Sam at Backyard Heroes Fireworks has three important tips:

• Always wear safety glasses.

• Have a bucket of water on hand so you can douse any fireworks that have residual heat.

• Always have a sober adult in charge.

The easiest way to find out if a firework is legal: if the package emits showers and sparks, then you’re good to.
