First on 12: Smith Point Bridge to reopen to 2 lanes ahead of Memorial Day weekend

The bridge has operated with a single lane and weight restrictions since structural deterioration was discovered during an inspection last year. County officials previously said they hoped to restore two-way traffic by Memorial Day.

After weeks of critical repairs, the Smith Point Bridge will reopen to two lanes Wednesday - in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Suffolk County sent News 12 the following statement:

“After weeks of critical repairs, we are pleased to announce that the Smith Point Bridge will reopen this week in time for Memorial Day weekend. We thank residents, visitors, and local businesses for their patience and understanding throughout this process as crews worked diligently to ensure the bridge is safe and ready for the busy summer season. We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable Memorial Day weekend and a wonderful summer at Smith Point County Park.”

The bridge has operated with a single lane and weight restrictions since structural deterioration was discovered during an inspection last year. County officials previously said they hoped to restore two-way traffic by Memorial Day.

Drone video from this past weekend showed long lines of traffic stretching from the bridge to the beach, with backups caused by a single lane closure during emergency repairs.

“So Sunday, I got here around 11 a.m. and I was stuck for about 45 minutes, straight back, and I thought to myself, ‘Is this worth it?’” said Joe Donza, of Centereach.

Traffic was lighter during the day Tuesday, but drivers noted congestion between the bridge and the beach have been significant in the evenings and on weekends.

In addition to the current repairs, Suffolk County plans to build a new Smith Point Bridge alongside the existing structure. The project is expected to be completed in 2029.
