First responders rescue cemetery worker who fell into open grave in Jamesburg

A cemetery worker fell into an open grave just after a funeral service happened.

The incident occurred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Jamesburg. First responders were called to the scene after the worker fell into the grave.

Crews had to stabilize the ground around the opening to prevent any more people from falling into the hole.

The Princeton Rescue Squad got the call just after 1 p.m. Tuesday to assist the South Brunswick police and fire departments. News 12 was told that the worker was pulled out by a rope system and that he was conscious the whole time.

The worker sustained a dislocated shoulder and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The cemetery is part of the Diocese of Metuchen.

A spokesperson for the diocese wrote in a statement, “This unfortunate incident occurred due to an equipment malfunction from the vault company… Upon learning of this accident, Bishop James F. Checchio, Bishop of Metuchen, has extended his heartfelt prayers for the man's well-being and full recovery and has expressed his gratitude to our first responders for their role in this successful rescue.”
