A special flag-laying ceremony was held at Woodlawn Cemetery Saturday to honor military service members ahead of Memorial Day.

The event was a partnership between the city's Department of Veterans Services and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

American flags were handed out to attendees to place at the graves of veterans and NYPD Explorers were on hand to help place the flags.

"I think it's important to remember that out of the more than 8 million New Yorkers, 210,000 are U.S. military service members past and present of the various services. It's important not only to remember them, but also their family members," said Department of Veterans Services Commissioner James Hendon.

Hendon added that it's important to honor veterans every day.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation, which donated 27,000 flags across the five boroughs to be placed at veteran gravesites, also announced a grant for the Department of Veterans Services to help provide food for veterans facing food insecurity.

Organizers said it's important to take care of those who have fought for the country.
