Floral Park residents are looking for answers after a large police presence shut down a neighborhood and prompted evacuations Tuesday.
The Nassau County Bomb Squad and Emergency Service Unit responded to Violet Avenue, along with Floral Park police.
Violet Avenue was closed between Clarence Street and Rose Avenue as officers investigated the situation.
Neighbors said they were asked to leave their homes and wait at the end of the block while police responded.
“I said, ‘Well, where am I going?’” Floral Park resident Al Cappelli said. “He didn’t explain exactly what he was doing, but he said, ‘You have to get out,’ so me and my wife stood over there.”
Neighbors said they remained outside for hours waiting to be cleared to return home.
Officers were seen going in and out of one house carrying a large brown bag.
Nassau County police have not said what they were looking for or whether anyone was arrested.
“I guess they’re being overly cautious,” one neighbor said. “Better safe than sorry, I guess.”
Residents say they are still waiting for more information about what prompted the police response.
