Customers of a Fordham parking garage say they haven't had access to their vehicles for more than a week because of a broken service elevator.
Residents say elevator issues at the multi-level parking garage on East 187th Street have been an ongoing problem. According to the New York City Department of Building's website, complaints from customers about the elevator not working date back to 2004.
As for as this current situation, the DOB told News 12 that a car and freight operator were inside the elevator when it fell into the elevator pit and caused severe damage on Feb. 8.
It said inspectors then issued a cease use order on the elevator after noticing a broken sheave shaft and other failing components that allowed the elevator car to malfunction.
The DOB said its primary concern is the safety of New Yorkers and before the elevator is allowed to return to service, inspectors will have to thoroughly examine the elevator to make sure it's safe to operate.
The DOB says the property owner is in the process of making repairs, and that inspectors are scheduled to conduct a follow-up inspection on the elevator on Wednesday morning.
News 12 reached out to the parking garage several times for comment, but has yet to hear back.
