Fordham University has banned the use of all battery powered e-scooters amid fire safety concerns.
Effective Jan. 3, school officials say all battery powered e-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards will no longer be permitted on all Bronx properties and sidewalks within campus grounds. Other colleges like Notre Dame, Loyola Chicago and Marquette have all followed suit.
The Jesuit university released the following statement, reading in part, "Nearly 140 people have been hurt and six people have been killed in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in New York City in 2022, according to FDNY which has opened more than 200 investigations into battery related fires since Jan. 1, 2022."
