A Bronx high school basketball star has withdrawn his commitment to play at the University of Miami.
Melvin Johnson played at Rich High School before it closed, leading the team to the CHSAA championship game two years ago. He then finished his last season at nationally ranked Saint Benedict's in Newark.
The 6 foot 2 inch guard requested and was granted a release from his national letter of intent. Had he gone to Miami, Johnson would have played for another Bronx native, Jim Larranaga.
