Chief Daniel Ricci suddenly died at age 65 earlier this week.
Ricci started with the department in 1983, became chief in 2002 and retired in 2006.
He is the second former Rockland police chief to pass away this year. Former Orangetown Police Chief Kevin Nulty died in March.
