With open enrollment underway, the Federal Trade Commission is issuing a warning about potentially misleading health insurance advertisements and scams.

The agency says some companies who promise comprehensive plans actually provide limited benefits and services.

Other companies offer medical discount cards instead of healthcare insurance.

Advertisements impersonating the government and reputable insurance companies have also appeared on the internet.

The FTC urged people to be cautious about calls, texts, social media messages and online search results.

To check the authenticity of an advertisement, the agency recommends looking into official sources like the HealthCare.Gov website and the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596.
