On a recent day, some young runners met on a track at P.S. 130 in Brooklyn.
The girls, who were participating in a 24-week program run by the nonprofit group Girls on the Run NYC, ran 30 laps around the small track. It amounted to about a mile.
"Sometimes I get tired," said young runner Ellie Stewart. "I just kind of push myself. I can run faster."
The girls also formed a circle and chanted, "Girls on the Run is so much fun." They even talked about the value of friendships, how to build self-esteem and how to be grateful.
Girls on the Run NYC aims to train girls for a 5K and, perhaps more important, help girls go the distance in life. The nonprofit has groups across the city.
The girls wished News 12 reporter Jessica Cunnington, who has helped raise more than $3,000 for Girls on the Run, well as she prepares to run the New York City Marathon.
The marathon is Sunday.
