A Clifton police officer is recovering after being struck by a vehicle on Route 21 while assisting a disabled vehicle Wednesday night.
Clifton Police Lt. Robert Anderson said the incident happened at about 9:38 p.m. on Route 21 near Route 46. The officer was in the area assisting a motorist with a disabled vehicle on the side of the road. Anderson said traffic was slow in the area due to congestion from the broken-down car.
"Two merging vehicles collided at a relatively low speed; one of them, a Honda Civic driven by a 24-year-old woman from Saddle Brook, then struck the officer and the disabled vehicle," Anderson said.
Police said all of the drivers involved in the crash stayed at the scene to speak with investigators. The driver of the Honda Civic was issued a summons for careless driving and failure to yield right of way.
The officer, who was standing next to the disabled car, suffered a lower leg injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was later released.
"We are thankful that our officer was not more seriously injured and, after some recovery time, is expected to make a full recovery," Anderson said.
