Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued an air quality advisory Monday as smoke from Canadian wildfires continue to negatively affect the air in New York.
According to the governor's advisory, the air quality is expected to reach levels upstate that are unhealthy for all New Yorkers. In New York City, it is expected to reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.
This includes children under 18 years old, adults who are 65 years old and older, those that are pregnant or those who have any pre-existing conditions such as heart disease or asthma.
The New York State Health Department says to avoid spending time outdoors in areas where the air quality index is over 100. The governor has directed that N95 masks be available across the state for those who need to head outside.
Emergency cellphone alerts will be going out to warn New Yorkers if the quality goes past the 200 mark, which means the air quality in your area is "Very unhealthy." In that case, everyone, especially for sensitive groups, should avoid being outdoors as much as possible.
