Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an expanded child tax credit for New York families on Monday.

The expansion boosts credit up to $1,000 per child under four and $300 per child aged four to 16.

Even larger increases are expected to arrive next year, according to officials.

State leaders say the change will put more money directly into the pockets of families, expanding eligibility to lower and middle income households.

Families must file a New York State tax return in order receive the credit, even if they owe no taxes.
