The Gowanus Canal flushing tunnel is reportedly fully operational again following a multimillion-dollar rehabilitation.
According to the Daily News, the canal's 1.2-mile long flushing tunnel has been officially reactivated after being turned off for the last four years due to repairs.
The $177 million renovation of the tunnel means that 30 percent more fresh water will be pumped into the canal, equating to 252 million gallons, and that the toxic water will be flushed out to the tidal currents of the New York Harbor.
The tunnel was built more than 100 years ago as a way to pump out polluted water, but in the 90s it began sending water in the opposite direction.
