A 100-year-old church in Greenpoint may be getting the miracle for which it's been waiting.
Pastor Mike Newburger says the scaffolding present at the First Union Baptist Church means progress for the house of worship.
The NYC Landmarks Conservancy not only announced that the church would be a sacred site, but also awarded it with a $25,000 grant to assist with construction.
Newburger says the grant will go toward repairing one of the most important parts of the building: the roof.
Despite lacking the funds to officially reopen, Newburger says he's grateful for the first step in restoring the church.
The church still requires about $200,000 to complete its repairs.
