The corner of Freeman Street and Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint has been renamed in honor of a lifelong New Yorker.
The corner will be renamed after Irene Klementowicz, an environmental activist who pushed for decades to close the Greenpoint incinerator and forced Mobil Oil to accept responsibility for an estimated 17 million gallon oil spill in the 1940s.
Klementowicz also advocated for zoning changes for heavy polluting companies.
