Residents living near the waterfront at 5 Blue Slip say a disturbing and unsanitary problem has been plaguing the area: dozens of used diapers scattered on the ground just steps from a popular walking path.
For families who frequent the area, the sight has been both shocking and frustrating.
“This is embarrassing. This is crazy,” said resident Stacey, who lives nearby. “My kids play out here, so this is not okay.”
Neighbors say the diapers have repeatedly appeared along the side of the building, forcing people to avoid the area entirely while walking along the waterfront.
“Very bad. I don’t like this - nobody likes this,” said Maria, a neighbor. “We don’t walk here. We go on the water and walk around.”
City data shows at least 56 service requests have been submitted through the city’s 311 system, with four specifically reporting dirty conditions in the area. All four cases were closed within the past three weeks, but residents say the situation hasn’t improved, leaving them feeling like their complaints aren’t being taken seriously.
“Just like dog poo - pick it up,” said resident Jasmine Rodriguez. “There are way too many garbage cans in the area. It’s disgusting. We don’t pay to live in such a great area to see diapers everywhere.”
After residents raised their concerns, a cleanup crew arrived at the scene within an hour of outreach to C&C Apartment Management, the company that oversees the nearby affordable housing building. Workers were seen collecting and disposing of what neighbors described as weeks’ worth of dirty diapers.
Despite the cleanup, some residents say the response came far too late.
“If I have to go back and forth reporting it, yeah, I probably would’ve called the news too,” Stacey said.
In a statement, a spokesperson for C&C Apartment Management said the company was "recently alerted to the unfortunate issue" and "will do [their] best to keep the area clean and work with residents to ensure hygienic disposal practices are followed."
