The rebuilt and renovated Gristedes supermarket opened its doors in Brooklyn Heights Friday morning, eight months after being ravaged by a fire.
Many local residents who turned out for the grand opening of the store at 101 Clark St. were happy and relieved to have their neighborhood supermarket back.
?We haven?t had a grocery store for months, so it?s pretty big we finally got one,? says shopper Kareem Ali.
Since April, the supermarket has been completely reconstructed and expanded. It now features a bigger pharmacy section and a bakery. It also offers shoppers meals to go.
The chairman and CEO of Gristedes says he is not worried that a competing chain, Trader Joe?s, now has a foothold in the neighborhood. He says his store is bigger and has a wider variety of items.
