Ground was broken Thursday on a new housing and retail complex in East New York.
The future Van Sinderen Plaza will provide 130 affordable apartments for rent in addition to shopping and community space.
A studio apartment will go for about $500 and a three-bedroom will be about $1,100 a month.
One building will be on Van Sinderen Avenue; the other on New Lots Avenue.
Residents must apply through the city's affordable housing lottery.
The project is expected to be completed in spring 2018.
