A local organization is working to decrease the unemployment rate of people with disabilities.
Only four out of 10 people with a disability in Brooklyn have jobs, statistics show.
The Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled helps employers and employees make simple accommodations to suit the needs of the job and the worker.
Kim Wilson Byers, who is visually impaired, is able to work as a receptionist at the center by using zoomed-in text on her computer and a magnifying glass.
Other tweaks that help workers with disabilities are wider hallways, which allow easier wheelchair movement, and voice recognition software for those who have difficulty writing.
While the center's workspace is designed to be as accessible as possible, officials say they also advise and promote other employers that are disability friendly.
