As part of Go Purple Day, volunteers were out at subway stations across New York City reminding residents that help is available for those in an abusive relationship.
The non-profit Sisters Building Sisters in Brooklyn Inc. estimates that one in four women have experienced domestic violence, while one in seven men have.
The group says they were out in the subway Thursday morning to catch people before they went to work and when they might be away from violent partners.
In Brooklyn, the best place to seek help is the New York City Family Justice Center located in Downtown Brooklyn.
