Members of the City Council's Black, Latino and Asian Caucus are calling on NYCHA officials to change the name on several housing complexes.
Two co-chairs of BLAC sent a letter to NYCHA asking officials to rename some complexes that have names of people associated with slavery. The members say a housing complex in Bed-Stuy is named after a 16th century Dutchman with ties to the slave trade. The Peter Stuyvesant housing complex in Brooklyn is also one of the eight buildings the group wants renamed.
Brooklyn Councilmember Robert Cornegy helped pen the letter and was one supporter who suggested renaming a Bronx development after Harriet Tubman.
NYCHA officials say they appreciate the letter and are reviewing the proposal. They say residents would have to reach a consensus before any changes could be made.
