Multiple events were held across New York City this weekend as the nation continues to observe Gun Violence Awareness Month.

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office hosted a 5K Run/Walk/Roll Against Gun Violence. Participants wore orange, the color of gun violence awareness

Runners started signing in just before 9 a.m. at Lou Gehrig Plaza. Before they took off, they heard from speakers, including Bronx District Attorney Darcell Clark, Borough President Vanessa Gibson and other community members impacted by gun violence.

The speakers also included the families of slain teen Angellyh Yambo and high school basketball star Brandon Hendricks.

Clark says they're planning to make the run an annual event. Gibson says a $50,000 scholarship will start in Brandon's memory and will be given to a Bronx student. 

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday an $18.2 million investment to support law enforcement agencies working to eliminate illegal guns off the streets and reduce shootings. This was part of the state's Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative.  

On Thursday, lawmakers in Albany voted on a package of new gun safety bills in the wake of the recent mass shootings across the United States. One of the bills places a ban on the sale and purchase of body armor with exceptions for law enforcement, peace officers, military and others whose job requires a bullet proof vest. Another bill raised the age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21 and made large capacity magazines illegal. The bills have passed through both the state Houses and now await the governor's signature to become law.

The group Moms Demand Action NYC also held an annual walk in solidarity with gun violence survivors.  Attendees gathered at Foley Square to hear from speakers before walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.
