The gunman responsible for fatally shooting 16-year-old Angellyh Yambo in April 2022 has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
“I just wish that he sits in jail for the rest of his life,” said Yambo's mother, Yanely Hernandez. “Even that won’t bring me comfort, because that won’t bring my daughter back.”
Jeremiah Ryan, now 18, was 17 years old when he shot Yambo. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark says Yambo was a bystander on her way home from school when she was struck by the gunfire.
“That was a terrible day, and they should not be standing here today. They should be celebrating she’s in school, once again pursuing her dreams to be a doctor, to be the vibrant young woman that she was,” said Clark.
Ryan apologized for his actions in front of the court on Friday when receiving his sentencing. Yambo’s mother says the remorse came far too late.
“He wasn’t remorseful in the beginning,” said Hernandez. “If you do something, the first thing you should do is apologize. So, his apology didn’t mean anything to me.
Angellyh’s family members have created an anti-gun violence foundation in Yambo's name, looking to turn their pain into positive change for the community.
The presiding judge also signed orders of protection for the two other teens who were struck by gunfire during that April 2022 incident.
