Health care workers, activists and other community members rallied outside of Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center on Thursday to keep their doors open. 

This comes as part of the state’s Vital Brooklyn Initiative to transform the medical center’s north campus into a more than 250-unit affordable housing development, called Kingsbrook Estates.

Three existing buildings on the more than 100,000 square-foot campus will be demolished and replaced with two newly constructed buildings. 

Another building will be redeveloped from hospital use into housing units. 

A hospital spokesperson tells News 12 they’re moving from a hospital-centric model to an ambulatory care model.

The initiative will also offer health, wellness, employment and support services. It will focus on the needs of the community. 

The hospital’s plan to eliminate inpatient beds was delayed during the coronavirus pandemic. 

News 12 reached out to Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and the governor’s office for a timeline of the plans and community concerns and has not heard back yet.
