High school basketball coach charged with shooting player's parent
A high school basketball coach has been charged in connection to the shooting of the parent of a player.
Officials say 42-year-old Todd Myles was arrested and is charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal use of a firearm.
Myles is a basketball coach at Paul Robeson High School.
Police say the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the coach and the parent dating back to Dec. 22. They say the parent had apparently gone to the suspect's house and engaged in a verbal dispute over how much time their child was getting on the court.
The 47-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Department of Education spokesman Doug Cohen said in a statement, "These are incredibly shocking allegations. We immediately reassigned Mr. Myles away from students and we'll work to remove him from payroll as soon as legally possible. We are providing support to the school and are working with the NYPD throughout this investigation."
News 12 is told Myles began as a substitute in 2001 and became a teacher in 2004. He apparently has no prior disciplinary history.
