High school students spent their Sunday planting seeds in Brooklyn's community gardens to help make the community more beautiful.
The New York City Parks Youth Leadership Council has had 127 students volunteering in 15 communities across the five boroughs since May.
At Ashford Abundant Gardens, students planted and built beds. Other projects at other gardens include compost bins, irrigation systems and planting vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Leaders of the program say their goal is to bring the community together to support homegrown gardening. They say Ashford Abundant Garden has been around for about six years and has become important to the neighboring areas. Much of the food made there is sold to the farmers market in East New York.
Students say overall they enjoy volunteering and hope to plant their own garden one day.
The NYC Parks Youth Leadership Council had their last gardening day Sunday, totaling more than 1,000 hours volunteered.
