A sinkhole in Sunset Park is leaving one family without access to their home.

The homeowners tell News 12 their basement flooded because of the sinkhole on 41st Street, which they said formed as a result of the city’s failure to address the ongoing issue of out-of-date pipelines.

The flooding, which may now cost them thousands of dollars for repairs, started less than 24 hours after a 311 complaint was made about sinkhole outside their home.

Residents said it’s also not the first time this same issue has happened on their block.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection for their response to the sinkhole. We’re told they investigated and found a broken sewer connection. Crews restored the area and made it safe. A DEP representative also said the broken sewer connection coming from the home is the homeowner’s responsibility to repair.
