After weeks of protesting the sale of Starrett City, residents see hope on the horizon with a new law. City officials are working on a proposal that would preserve affordable housing at the complex and many others. More than a dozen officials announced their plan Sunday from City Hall to propose a law that would make it illegal to drive pre-approved affordable housing up to the market rate. Such laws would protect Starrett City and similar housing complexes in New York. Starrett City, the nation?s largest affordable housing complex nationwide, was recently sold for $1.3 billion. Elected officials say with the high price, there is no way the new owners could turn a profit without cutting services and raising prices. Residents have been protesting the sale, insisting they will lose their homes if prices are raised.
