Coney Island Hospital has unveiled major improvements, two years after it was heavily damaged during Superstorm Sandy.
The city's Health and Hospitals Corporation and the New York Power Authority joined hospital officials Thursday to announce the completion of a $21 million storm resiliency and energy efficiency project.
Sandy destroyed Coney Island Hospital's boiler room, forcing the hospital to close for three months, but the upgraded system now has a raised platform to protect infrastructure from possible flooding in the future.
The project has also improved the energy efficiency of the hospital's boiler, windows and air conditioning units.
The project is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Build Smart NY initiative, which aims to increase energy efficiency in public buildings.
