The House of Representatives
is holding a debate to consider an article of impeachment against President
Donald Trump.
The article of impeachment
follows the violent storming of the Capitol last Wednesday, and charges the
president for “incitement of insurrection.”
Security increased in the
nation’s capital in preparation of any possible violent response to the day’s
hearing.
Representatives on both sides
voiced reasons to impeach the president.
“Is there little time left?” says Rep. Steny Hoyer. “Yes, but it’s never too
late to do the right thing.”
Others say impeaching the president will only serve to further divide the
American people.
“The House is moving forward erratically with a truncated process that does not
contort with the modern process and will give members no time to contemplate
the serious course of action before us,” says Rep. Tim Cole.
Bronx Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to social media today, saying: “I had
a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die. It is not an
exaggeration to say that many, many members of the House were nearly
assassinated.”
At least five Republican
members of the House say they will join Democrats in voting to impeach Trump.
A vote is expected at some
point this afternoon.
If it succeeds, it would send
the articles of impeachment to the Senate.
