HUD official moves into Fenimore-Lefferts Houses as part of NYCHA tour
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development official Lynne Patton is continuing her scheduled visits of New York City housing developments.
She moved into the Fenimore-Lefferts Houses in East Flatbush Monday night. She spoke with News 12 about her plans for the stay and her experience so far.
Patton, who oversees federal housing assistance programs, says her goal is to shine a spotlight on what she calls “deplorable conditions in affordable housing developments.”
She says she is trying to force NYCHA to respond to complaints.
Longtime tenants have pointed out moldy ceilings, leaking sewage in the basement and peeling paint. Patton calls it a humanitarian crisis.
“I am going to take my findings back to the federal monitor to make sure we redesign the work order system that’s a complete and utter failure,” says Patton.
In response to Patton's visit, a NYCHA spokesperson says staff will prioritize health and safety repairs. They say tenants should address problems by filing tickets.
Tenants say they have been filing tickets, and problems are getting worse.
