Hundreds attended the funeral Sunday of a NYPD auxiliary cop who was shot down in the line of duty. Family and friends of Eugene Marshalik gathered in Brooklyn to honor the sacrifices he made to protect others. Marshalik, 19, was one of two auxiliary officers gunned down Wednesday in Manhattan after confronting a gunman who had killed a bartender in a Greenwich Village restaurant. His casket was covered with the NYPD?s blue, green and white flag and was carried by uniformed police officers. Marshalik will be remembered as a young man who wanted to make a difference. Auxiliary officers are volunteers and only carry nightsticks to protect themselves. In the face of this tragedy, the NYPD is considering changing the policy and providing bulletproof vests and other safety equipment to volunteers as well.
