Hundreds of people paid tribute Sunday in Prospect Park to a bicyclist with a heart of gold who was fatally struck two years ago.
Friends and family members gathered for the Liz Padilla Memorial 5K to raise money for underprivileged Brooklyn residents in need of legal help. Some of the estimated $40,000 raised at the event will also go toward funding a Cornell Law scholarship in Padilla's name.
The 28-year-old attorney worked for the Volunteer Lawyers Project. She was killed in June 2005 on Fifth Avenue while biking to her nonprofit job. Padilla also volunteered with disabled athletes.
"When she was working for the Volunteer Lawyers Project, she was planning a race such as this," said Padilla's mother Kathy. "Unfortunately, she was killed before it happened."
Kathy Padilla and others believe the 5K was a fitting a tribute.
