The task force sent from New York City down to Florida to assist with Hurricane Ian was welcomed back home by members of the FDNY and NYPD.
The 48-man team arrived at Fort Myers Beach about two weeks ago, where they conducted urban searches in 458 buildings, with more than 60 buildings requiring a water search. It was the first deployment for 17 of them.
“The devastation was really striking,” said one first responder. “Homes on the beach that had been there for 100 years left with only the piers they sat on. Completely washed away.”
The task force, made up entirely of members of the FDNY and NYPD, thankfully did not need to recover anyone, but came across about 20 homes with people sheltering in place.
