Many families celebrating Three Kings Day mark the occasion by treating their sweet tooth with Rosca de Reyes cakes, decorated with fruit, icing and holding religious symbolism.
Rosca de Reyes, also known as three kings bread, is eaten on Three Kings Day every year and is a longstanding tradition in Hispanic households across the world. It marks the day in Christian faith that the three wise men following the star to Bethlehem arrived with gifts for baby Jesus.
The tradition calls for a small plastic infant figure to be placed inside the cake to symbolize Jesus hidden from King Herod’s troops.
EJ’s Bakery, located in Riverdale, spends all of every Jan. 6 working on their Rosca de Reyes cakes. They say that in many cases, whoever finds the baby Jesus inside their cake piece has to make food for others.
