Residents in Brooklyn having a tough time staying afloat financially will soon have more help under the mayor's new plan.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) announced Monday that 22,000 new Section 8 vouchers will be made available citywide in the next two years. Bloomberg says the vouchers will reopen the Section 8 waiting list for the first time in 12 years. Individuals and families with the vouchers can seek housing from any private landlord who accepts them.

The New York City Housing Authority is currently trying to find people who signed up for Section 8 as far back as 1993. If those people are found and are still eligible, they will be given priority on the new voucher list.
