An I.S. 318 student is facing charges for allegedly bringing a gun to school Tuesday.
According to police, they arrested the seventh- or eighth-grade boy around 9:30 a.m. at the Prospect Avenue school. Police say the boy might have brought the weapon to school to show it off or to intimidate another student, but add that it wasn't loaded.
Parents are upset because they were never informed about the incident and only learned about it while their children were getting out of school. They also suggested metal dectors are needed. "That's wrong. They should check ... [backpacks] and everything," says grandparent Margarita Rodriguez.
The boy, whose name is being withheld due to his age, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon. School officials are still deciding what disciplinary action he'll face.
