'It might save my life.' Citi Bike rack moved to outside Kent Avenue Trader Joe's

The New York City Department of Transportation says the rack was moved because of construction at the original location and that they will evaluate if it should be moved back or stay outside the Trader Joe's when the work is done.

The Department of Transportation recently moved the Citi Bike rack that was at the corner of Wythe Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue a few blocks over to the corner of Kent Avenue and N 3rd Street, right outside of a Trader Joe's.
"My reaction was 'sick - I don't have to find a bike as far away," said Connor Desrochers, a Greenpoint resident who shops there often.
"It made my day!" added Anna Mojsiewicz, who also lives in Greenpoint. "I'm so happy."
The happiness did not last long, as throughout Monday morning, person after person saw that the dock was offline and did not show up in the app - meaning, there was no way to check bikes out from it.
"It's a total tease, it's really frustrating," laughed Sarah Brown, who lives in the area.
Others, like Jessica Gabay, saw the dock when they first walked in, and just assumed it would work.
"It was part of my plan," she explained. "I was like I'll just get extra groceries that are heavier, because I'm just going to get a bike on the way out and then it wasn't working, so now I have my heavy groceries."
The New York City Department of Transportation says the rack was moved because of construction at the original location and that they will evaluate if it should be moved back or stay outside the Trader Joe's when the work is done.
"There's always too many people trying to park for how many docks there are available so, it's much easier for me to park right outside," said Desrochers.
Mojsiewicz said she was also in favor of it staying in the new location.
"Whenever I had to go to Trader Joe's, I had to walk one block there or two blocks there, so with carrying the heavy stuff, it might save my life," says Mojsiewicz.
It was an opinion that was shared by most shoppers we spoke with, even though there are other docks in the area, and Kent is a narrow street with already limited parking spaces for cars.
"It might be frustrating for some of the people with cars over here - there's a nice lot in the back, so I think it works out," Brown said.
Things worked out as well with the dock. Citi Bike says that it was up and running, and the app was updated a little after 4 p.m. Monday.
