A victim of a Labor Day shooting that injured six people in Brooklyn, including her 7-year-old son, says that the incident will change her life forever.
Patricia Brathwaite describes the moments she stepped out of a taxi, returning home just before 3 a.m. with her son.
"I felt nothing...my foot was spouting blood, and I felt nothing because my focus was on my son," she says. "There were over 300 people, and I was waiting to cross the street, and the young man decided to open fire in a crowd of people, that's what happened."
Police say that the suspect, 15-year-old Donovan Bailey, is in custody and facing charges, including attempted murder and assault related to the shooting that morning at the corner of Crown Street and Nostrand Avenue.
Brathwaite's son, 7-year-old Maxwell Cesc-Dinho, still lays in a hospital bed as he recovers from wounds to both of his legs. While Brathwaite recovers, her wounds haven't shifted her from her son's bedside.
"I've never been home, I went home once the day of that afternoon, and since then I've never been home. I've been here every single day," she says.
Maxwell sustained the worst injuries out of everyone that was shot that morning. His femur bone was shattered in his right leg, and he's still not moving that leg.
While the journey ahead for Brathwaite and her son is unclear, with multiple procedures in the weeks, and months to come, a GoFundMe page has been set up for assistance.
"It's going to change our lives forever, my son is going to have a very long recovery," Brathwaite says. "To go through the pain at 7 years old, it's tough... to see him have to deal with this."
While Brathwaite would not comment about the gunman or on the ongoing case, she says anyone that causes injury to another human being should be held accountable.
